Metabolism & its reactions
what is metabolism
Metabolism is the general term that describes the different changes taking
place in the body. Catabolic processes involve the production of heat and
energy. The energy requirements of an individual depends on his/her age, size
and metabolic rate.
Metabolism & its reactions |
The
metabolic rate is partly controlled by the thyroid gland hormones and is
affected by temperature and a person's activity. What is referred to as Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the
heat and energy required to maintain cellular functions when the body is at
rest.
Metabolism is a process made up of:
1. Catabolic reactions
in which complex substances are broken down to simpler forms with
release of energy for cellular activity. e.g., hydrolysis of glycogen to
glucose.
2. Anabolic reactions
in which absorbed nutrients are built up into complex compounds that
the body needs for its activity.e.g. synthesis of protein from amino acids.
