Procedure for reagent strip test
2. Remove the strip from urine. Remove excess
fluid by tapping the strip edge against the urine container.
3. Allow to stand for the reaction to
occur for the length of time specified by the manufacturers.
4. Immediately, compare colour of test with
colour chart. Hold the strip close to the colour chart.
Result:: The tests are usually read as trace, small (+) moderate
(++) or large (+++) which can be quantified according to the manufacturer's
direction. Some of the common reagent strips are described below.
Multistix(Ames)- This multitest strip for bilirubin uses 2,4
dichloroanilinediazonium salt buffered to acid pH. The colour produced is
brownish to purple. Results are read as small (+), moderate (++) or large (+++)
by comparison with the colour chart. The test will detect 0.4 to 0.8 mg/dl
bilirubin.
Chemstrip-- This reagent strip uses 2,6
dichlorobenzene diazonium-tetra fluoroborate. The result is seen as change of
colour from white to pink or light red. It is reported as for the multistix. It
will detect up to 0.5 mg/dl bilirubin.
