Test for B-hydroxybutyric acid
There is no direct routine test for
this ketone body. Its presence in urine can be detected indirectly by first
getting rid of the acetone and acetoacetic acid. Determine the urine pH; if
acid, then boil to remove the acetone and acetoacetic acid.
Treat the urine with hydrogen
peroxide to oxidise B-hydroxybutyric acid to acetoacetic acid.Perform the
nitroprusside test. A positive reaction is indicative of the presence of
B-hydroxybutyric acid.
Causes of ketonuria
1. Diabetes indicates ketoacidosis
which maylead to coma if unchecked.
2. Acute febrile states especially in
infants.
3. Excessive vomiting and diarrhoea.
.
4. Glycogen storage impairment.
